  • Itinerary

    Day 1: Arrival in Munich. Check in to hotel for 3 nights.

    Day 2: Munich. Go on a tour of the city. Stroll through the historic old town to Marienplatz to see the old and new town hall with its Glockenspiel chiming every day at 11 am, 12 pm and 5 pm. Go on to the Cathedral of Our Dear Lady, one of Munich's landmarks, then to Promenadenplatz. Cross the Funf Hofe to Odeonsplatz, pass nearby Feldherrnhalle and Theatine Church to get a view of the Victory Gate. Continue past Residenz, National Theater and the Munich Opera. Go on to one of Munich's royal avenues, Maximilianstrasse and past the Old Court, imperial residence of Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV, to the beer hall Hofbrauhaus am Platzl. End the tour at the Viktualienmarkt, a food and delicatessen market held every day. Return to hotel.

    Day 3: Continue through the Allgau region of the Alps to Neuschwanstein Castle, built as a retreat for King Ludwig II. Tour of the castle's interior. The architecture of the 'fairy tale castle' is characteristic of the 19th century Romanesque Revival. After the tour, take a walk down to the valley, then continue to Wies Church for a tour of the Rococo pilgrimage church and World Heritage Site. Return to hotel.

    Day 4: Continue to Berchtesgaden. A boat takes you to the pilgrimage Church of St. Bartholomew on Konigsee, a fjord-like lake known for its beautiful blue waters. Take in the magnificent scenery of the tranquil lake and snow-covered Mount Watzmann in the background. Visit to St. Bartholomew's Church and its red domed roofs. Go on to the oldest enzian distillery for a tasting of the spirit made of gentian roots. A tour of the nearby salt mine takes you down funiculars, slides for a raft ride on the underground salt lake. Continue to Salzburg, Austria, birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the evening, opportunity to shop in the famous shopping district 'Getreidegasse'. Check in to hotel for two nights.

    Day 5: Salzburg. Explore World Heritage Site Salzburg in a tour of the city. Start at the Franciscan Church and St. Peter's Church. Go on to Mirabell Palace with its famous gardens featured in 'The Sound of Music'. Walk uphill to Hohensalzburg Castle for a panoramic view of the city. Visit Mozart's Birth House and Hellbrunn Palace, a Baroque villa with extensive gardens and parks in the south of Salzburg. Return to hotel.

    Day 6: Continue through the picturesque Wachau landscape for a tour of the Benedictine Melk Abbey, landmark of the Wachau region and Unesco World Heritage. The most magnificent of all Austrian sacred buildings was rebuilt by Prandtauer and his pupil Munggenast in the first half of the 18th century. Continue to Mariazell. Overnight stay in Mariazell.

    Day 7: Mariazell, one of Austria's foremost pilgrimage sites with a13th century statue of Madonna. Visit the Baroque basilica with the Gothic Portal and treasury. Opportunity to take a stroll along nearby Erlaufsee Lake and a boat trip on a pedal-boat, electric boat or rowing boat afterwards. Continue to Vienna.

    Day 8: Continue to Vienna. Starting at St. Stephen's Cathedral - landmark of Vienna's old town - take a walking tour of the city to the 'Graben' and St. Peter's Church. Pass the famous Café Demel to Michaelerplatz square. Visit the Hofburg winter residence of the Habsburgs with the treasury and the imperial apartments. A sightseeing tour takes you along Ringstrasse to Parliament, town hall, Burgtheater and the Vienna State Opera. Visit the Baroque Church of St. Charles. Continue to Joseph Square for a visit of the Austrian National Library with its impressive State Hall. Go on to Stallburg and end the tour at the Imperial Crypt of the House of Habsburg. Return to hotel.

    Day 9: Departure.
